Meet the Brewers + Live Music | 1:00pm

BLUESMAN MIKE FRANCIS | JODY AND THE JERMS | RECORD FAIR

We know the Beer Festival is one of the gems in the Westy calendar - so we wanted to bring a little taste to this year's festival. We have the craft beer bar throughout the weekend, but this is the chance to meet a couple of brewers we've invited down to talk about their ethos, passion and of course their beers! As part of your ticket you get a tasting flyte and first dibs on takeaway beer from the stand. We'll also have some live music from Bluesman Mike Francis, the 101 Collectors record fair and of course stonebaked pizza available to order!

Powder Monkey

Powder Monkey Brewing Company is housed out of an historic gunpowder magazine that has been restored and repurposed as modern microbrewery to brew explosive tasting craft beer. This marriage of tradition and creativity is reflected in our beers as we delve into the history of different styles before re-imaging them with modern twists, under a belief that ‘great beers are born when science meets creativity’.

Powder Monkey

The core beers focus on styles that bring bold flavours while retaining drinkability, for beers that are sessionable with substance. We also produce an ever-changing range of speciality beers from bright fruited sours to heavy stouts with depth of flavour.

Unashamedly nostalgic sounding, with comparisons to Kirsty MacColl. The GoGos and The Bangles, the sextet provide a modern twist with many plays on radio stations around the World

Bluesman Mike Francis

Bluesman Mike Francis. The name conjures up all kinds of images. The sort of name, perhaps of a chap that was at the crossroads watching with Robert Johnson when it all went down. But, whilst he’s played with everybody over his 42 years in the business, the truth of the name is another guy called Mike Francis died and took the bluesman’s Google rankings. If that is the modern world writ large, then the acoustic blues sounds here at least take us away from the 21st century up to a point. “Five More Wishes” is a clever opener, Francis playing as a one man band, with a kick drum and some fine loop work. “Leadbelly Blues” is his take on “House Of New Orleans”, and a new track “Devil’s Waiting Room” all exemplify his skills. Most striking of all, perhaps, is a blues cover of Depeche Mode’s “Dawning Of Our Love”. That in itself is not a phrase I expected to write tonight, much less that it worked excellently. A short set is ended with “Blinded By The Bistro”, a track from his latest EP, and it is an entertaining, expertly played slice of blues from a man clearly steeped in – and enthralled by – the music.
