Calling all children over three years of age and parents/guardians who love tactile and manipulation materials! Come and experience this wonderful natural resource and learn pottery. You will be using two types of clay to make sculptural creations to then be fired. This workshop is designed for children who can sit with either a parent/guardian or alone and can listen to short instructions. Although clay is a natural material, it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to monitor the child’s use.

The pottery studio at the West End Centre is a lovely space and is well-equipped. Attendees will be given access and tutoring to use the potters’ wheels.

Tutor: Kim Whelton

Kim Whelton's main passion is to help others embrace creativity, regardless of their perceived ability. Her first love is ceramics, so being able to impart some of her knowledge and passion is very significant to her. Colour, form and abstraction in reflection have always been a major curiosity in her creative thinking. Through ceramics, photography, and all the while experimenting with captured images, she's come full circle, exploring how to recreate her images in ceramic form and glaze. The fuel and sympathy in this body of work have come from the past decade of working closely with individuals across all age groups, and how mental health manifests from experiences and pressures put on ourselves and by others as well as suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s. Drawing from these interactions, she is working to create vulnerability and strength encapsulated by form and surface. Kim's work is largely thrown and altered with layers of glaze from multiple firings.
